The only debate there has ever been concerning Christy Mathewson's place in baseball history is whether he or Walter Johnson was the greatest of all time. While Johnson could blow the ball right by hitters throughout his career, Matty was forced to give up on a strict fastball early-on, eventually developing his "fadeaway" or what is now known as a "screwball".
